I have heard a new sound twice - once the night before last, and again last night. I did not record the first one, but did record last night's on my iphone 6s. I then uploaded the sound file, and in Audacity, converted it to a WAV file, amplified it and cut out a lot of dead air waiting time. Converted the final output to mp3 format. I have in previous years recorded bobcat sounds as well as red fox. I've compared this output to many sources on the internet and have found no matches, although one of the owls sounds close. I'd appreciate it if you could definitively ID the sound source. Thank you.

Hi Jeff,
Well done in getting a nice recording of the unknown nocturnal call. Your post had the MyWoodlot team scouring the internet for owl call sound clips. Karl VonBerg immediately recognized your recording as an owl. Heather Hilson pointed out that it sounds like there are two birds (one near and one far). My guess is that you have two Barred Owls. I hope this Youtube video of North American owl calls is helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzbmj6vuMw8. Please let us know what you think!

Thank you all for your quick reply. We think you are accurate and that yours was a good call. If you would like to hear my previous recordings of bobcat and red fox let me know. I will dig them out of my files.
Best,

Hi Jeff,
Sure, I'd love to hear your bobcat and red fox recordings! How are you able to record so many neat wildlife calls?

I was fortunate to see a bobcat and a fisher while bowhunting in the Catskills last fall. I don't think either one of them saw me as they were on the move. If you're interested, I wrote a blog which has links to the bobcat and fisher videos I took with my cell phone. https://www.mywoodlot.com/item/where-have-all-the-squirrels-gone.
Cheers,
Kris
