Hi Woodlot folks, thanks for the useful resources you provide here.

We have a forest lot on a sloping site with bedrock formation. The forest wasn’t managed and looks pretty wild.
I though it would be good to clear it up a bit and make some trails for recreational use, but I have no experience in the matter. Can you recommend whom may I talk to? Most of the websites I find are about harvesting the wood, not sure how relevant are their service for our case.
We are located near Cornwall, NY.

Thanks!

Hi Katerina,

Thanks for your message. Unfortunately you're not in the NYC Watershed so you wouldn't be eligible for a free visit from one of out foresters BUT the Master Forest Owner (MFO) Program has some members in Putnam County. These are forestland owners who have had training and experiences managing forests and are there to help people like yourself make informed decisions on your land - even if it does not involve harvesting. Many people manage for wildlife and aesthetics. They will come to your property, free of charge, and walk and talk about options and opportunities that may be available to you in your area. I think that would be a good place for you to start.

Here is a link to more information on the MFO Program:

Here is a link to a list of Master Forest Owners, there are 2 listed for Putnam County.

I will also reach out to the team here to see if anyone has any other helpful suggestions for you. Please let us know how you make out if you choose to try the MFO program. It's very popular in our area (Delaware County, NY).

Best, Heather

Hi Katerina,

I also think talking to a Master Forest Owner is a good place to start. For additional connections between landowners and natural resource professionals, you can check out the Women Owning Woods- Catskills | Hudson Valley group (WOW). Here's a link to the Facebook page.
