Woodland Walk: Forestry Principles for Landowners

Woodland Walk: Forestry Principles for Landowners

The Catskill Park is a unique mosaic of public forest preserve and private woodlots, each playing a vital role in regional conservation and water filtration. To help local landowners understand the ecology of their own trees, the Catskills Visitors Center is hosting an educational morning walk along its interpretive trail network. Led by regional natural resource specialists, this walk introduces foundational forestry concepts in an easy-to-understand format.

Participants will learn how to identify dominant native tree species by their bark, branching, and late-summer leaves. We will look at forest succession, showing how past clearing or logging events shaped the current age and structure of the woods. The tour will also cover practical forest management ideas, detailing how small changes—like leaving dead standing trees for wildlife or managing trail runoff—can dramatically improve your property’s ecological value. This walk is tailored for land stewards who want to build a closer relationship with their woods and understand the natural cycles of the Catskill region. Pre-registration is requested to ensure group sizes remain interactive.
