Wildflower Island Guided Tours

Wildflower Island Guided Tours

Safeguarding sensitive plant species from heavy deer browse and invasive competition is one of the greatest challenges facing modern forest owners. This exclusive outdoor field experience at Teatown Lake Reservation takes you directly into a thriving, protected ecological refuge: Wildflower Island.

Safe behind a secure deer-exclusion boundary, this unique two-acre island setting preserves a delicate forest understory that has largely vanished from the broader regional landscape.Led by an experienced environmental guide, participants will walk the island paths to view rare native flowers, delicate ferns, and vibrant native shrubs blooming beneath a pristine canopy. The tour provides an in-depth look at how soil moisture, shade, and geographical isolation work together to support these plant populations.

Landowners will gain practical insights into the profound ecological impact of deer pressure and learn to recognize native understory indicators that may still be trying to take root in their own home woodlots. Because of the fragile nature of this sanctuary ecosystem, space is strictly capped, and pre-registration is required.
