The State of Westchester Forests

This presentation will offer a big-picture view of what’s happening in our local forests—the long arc of clearing and regrowth, the rise and fall of agriculture, deer impacts, forest pests and diseases, invasive species, and how all of these forces have shaped forest composition over time. At the end of the talk, you will understand the current challenges facing our forests and simple ways you can get involved in solutions.

Bio: John Zeiger is the manager of the Thain Family Forest at the New York Botanical Garden. He holds a Master's Degree in Conservation Biology from SUNY ESF and a Bachelor’s in Natural Resources from Cornell University. Prior to his current position, he managed 1000 acres of forest and other natural areas for the Westchester Land Trust. His previous work also included wildlife monitoring or habitat restoration in Arizona, California, Wisconsin and Jamaica.

This event is hosted by the Pound Ridge Land conservancy. Founded in 1975, the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy (PRLC) protects over 550 acres of undeveloped land, as owner or through conservation easements, under our management. Today, our footprint includes 20 preserves, three conservation easements, and over 12 miles of hiking trails — and growing!
