Signs of Spring Hike

Signs of Spring Hike

Join the North Salem Open Land Foundation for a Signs of Spring Hike at Lances–Lippmann Preserve as we explore the early ecological changes that signal the arrival of a new season.

During this guided walk, we’ll look for classic spring ephemerals and other early indicators of spring, including emerging tree buds, skunk cabbage, and the first signs of amphibians awakening from winter dormancy. We’ll also keep our ears open for the calls of early-breeding frogs and listen for changes in bird activity as migration begins.

Along the way, we’ll talk about why species appear when they do, how plants take advantage of early-season sunlight before the forest canopy fills in, and what these early signs tell us about forest health and seasonal change.
