Night in the Forest Exploration
A forest never sleeps, but its entire cast of characters shifts once the sun drops below the horizon. Landowners rarely get to see the crucial nocturnal processes that happen right on their properties. This late-evening field workshop at the Wild Hudson Valley farm invites you into the woods at twilight to observe our woodland ecosystems from an entirely new perspective
As we quiet our senses and walk without heavy artificial lights, educators will guide you in tracking nocturnal wildlife indicators. We will listen for the calls of native owls, map the paths of local mammals, and observe the fascinating emergence of night-flying pollinators like sphinx moths, which play an unsung role in propagating native forest flora.
We will also look out for seasonal fireflies and explore how mature trees and deadwood standing structures serve as vital daytime roosting spots and evening staging grounds for bats and nocturnal birds. Understanding night ecology allows forest stewards to make smarter woodlot management choices—such as leaving safe "snags" (dead standing trees) intact to protect these vital evening insect-eaters. Bring a small, low-intensity flashlight or headlamp with a red-light setting to protect everyone's night vision.
This event is hosted by Wild Hudson Valley. Wild Hudson Valley was founded in 2013 to teach about the rich history and environment of the region in a fresh, new way. Our walks, workshops, forest farmed products, and camping bring the past into the present and inspire others to become stewards of our planet
