Experiencing a woodlot from the ground provides only a partial picture of a forest’s true biological complexity. The uppermost layers of the forest canopy support a wealth of specialized wildlife, unique branch architectures, and complex health dynamics that are normally hidden from sight. To help participants form a completely fresh perspective on woodland ecosystems, Mountain Top Arboretum is partnering with the Women's Tree Climbing Workshop to host an immersive, hands-on high-canopy field training day.

This course introduces the foundational safety protocols and physical systems utilized by professional arborists and canopy researchers. Under the close instruction of certified field specialists, participants will learn how to handle professional throw-lines, tie bulletproof ascending knots, and adjust specialized climbing saddles to distribute body weight evenly. Once comfortable with the basic physics of mechanical rope assists, every climber will have the opportunity to safely ascend directly into the upper boughs of the Arboretum's mature timber trees.This experience builds true self-confidence while providing an unmatched window into canopy density, crown structures, and forest health conditions from high above the forest floor. No prior climbing experience is required; all technical ropes, helmets, and safety saddles are provided on site.
