Solace and Sanctuary with Kate McGloughlin and Gail Straub

The 54 page cloth-covered edition includes 24 color reproductions of McGloughlin’s luminous oil paintings of the Ashokan Reservoir and twenty inspirational essays by Straub which honor her ongoing relationship to the Ashokan and commitment to conservation. This gathering will feature an intimate conversation between the artist and author, as they reflect on the restorative power of nature, creativity and the friendship they enjoy which grew from a mutual reverence for this extraordinarily beautiful place.

“Solace and Sanctuary is at once a lyrical form of devotion, and a powerful call to recognize wilderness and unadulterated open space as key to our humanity, especially in divisive and tech-addled times like today. It is a reminder of how our awe for earth is intrinsically connected to our capacity to hope and to heal, leading to an inexorable yearning to act”, writes Straub.

Kate McGloughlin, a twelfth generation resident of Ulster County, New York, is a celebrated painter and printmaker who currently lives and maintains a vibrant studio in Olivebridge, NY. She has been included in over 70 exhibitions in notable galleries and in four museums in the US, Japan, Scotland and Ireland, and is President Emeritus of The Woodstock School of Art where she teaches Printmaking, Landscape Painting and is empress of the newly renovated Printmaking Studio.

A visionary pioneer and activist in the field of empowerment, Gail Straub co-founded the Empowerment Institute in 1981. She is the author of six books that have garnered multiple awards, including the best-selling Empowerment; the critically acclaimed The Rhythm of Compassion; her feminist memoir, Returning to My Mother’s House; and The Ashokan Way: Landscape’s Path into Consciousness.
