Belonging to the Earth

Trained as a plant ecologist, Kimmerer weaves together Indigenous knowledge and Western science, offering an integrative approach to understanding the natural world. Her lecture will explore how scientific inquiry can be enriched by Indigenous ecological knowledge rooted in observation, experience, and ethical responsibility.

She will reflect on what plants and ecosystems can teach us about resilience, interdependence, and gratitude — and how, as detailed in her book The Serviceberry, practices of reciprocity can guide more sustainable and meaningful relationships with the living world. Blending science, story, and reflection, her talk invites us to see the environment not as a collection of resources, but as a community to which we belong.

This event is hosted by the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, an independent non-profit that supports basic environmental research with the potential for transformative impact.
