Was hiking in Dutchess County over the weekend and saw a tree that had fallen over across the trail, and was chainsawed. The log was totally covered in vines, which likely weighted the tree down to the points of falling over. I was looking down at what I thought was Japanese stiltgrass growing up around the log, but after a closer look I realized it was sprouts from the tree itself and not the invasive grass (they looked surprisingly similar at first glance), meaning the tree roots were still attached to the ground. Black willows are really good at resprouting, so maybe there are other willow sprouts mixed in the sea of vines trying to escape from the vines.
