We got this question from a Bovina (Delaware County, NY) landowner: small clusters of green leaves (with their stems) are falling off the ends of branches on my white ash trees. Is this an early warning sign of EAB?
Here's our advice:
What you’re describing does not sound like Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) to me. It is correct that EAB causes leaf loss in affected ash trees. However, as larvae EAB feed inside the bark they interrupt the flow of nutrients and moisture to the leaves. So leaves that whither and fall are very unlikely to appear green and healthy. There are better signs to look for. I suggest looking at these two resources:
